Obituary of John Davenport Carroll, Sr.

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Davenport Carroll, Sr. passed away Sept 18, 2016. Born in Chicago, Illinois on February 15, 1928, John is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Jeanette Carroll, his brother Howard Carroll, six of his seven children Ann Zavala, Tim Carroll, Mary Tunnicliff, Julie Sill, Howard Carroll and Colleen Witt. John lost his oldest son and namesake, John Davenport, Jr on August 24, 2016. John also had 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. John was first and foremost a man who loved his family. He instilled a strong sense of family in his children and all he touched. He was also a visionary with an amazing ability to see things that know one else could see. Whether it was a piece of driftwood that he would manipulate so you could see that it was actually a sculpture of a lion pouncing on its prey or a piece of land that could be developed into a multi site apartment complex, John saw things and life through these unique and loving eyes. For almost three decades John devoted his entrepreneurial spirit and skills to Long Beach in Michigan City, Indiana where he formed Carroll Realty. Through Carroll Realty, John became one of the true pioneers of the development of Long Beach where he developed its first and only shopping center, Karwick Plaza, together with many homes and apartment complexes. He will be sorely missed. Funeral Mass will be 11 am Thurs. Sept 22 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E Maple Ave, Libertyville. Funeral arrangements by McMurrough Funeral Chapel (847) 362-2626 and www.libertyvillefuneralhome.com
