Obituary of Michael F. Hettinger
Michael F. Hettinger, aged 83, peacefully passed away on June 17, 2023, at Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, following a courageous battle with cancer. Throughout his remarkable life, Michael possessed an extraordinary ability to defy the odds. Afflicted by polio as a young boy, he received disheartening prognoses, but time and time again, he defied expectations, triumphing over numerous health obstacles.
Even in his later years, when polio resurfaced and affected his mobility, Michael tenaciously refused to let it diminish his spirit. He embraced life with an unwavering positive outlook and never uttered a complaint. Over the course of his successful 31-year career at Abbott, he started as a programmer and ascended through the ranks, retiring as Manager, Corporate Business Systems.
A devoted parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Michael served as a Minister of Care, extending compassion and support to the patients of Condell Hospital. He played an active role in the lives of his children as their dedicated Scout Leader for Troop 60. Together with his beloved Diane, he embarked on enchanting adventures, exploring the world. The cherished memories of Disney and Alaska cruises with their children and grandchildren held a special place in their hearts.
Michael exemplified unwavering character, always placing the needs of others before his own. He was a beacon of reliability and a remarkable role model to all who knew him. His absence leaves a void that can never be filled. Michael's legacy will forever endure, and his absence will be profoundly felt by those who loved him dearly.
Michael is survived by his wife Diane of 57 years; his cherished children William (Sheryl) and Brian (Jamie); his adoring grandchildren Rachel and Emily and his dearest siblings Patricia, David and Catherine. He is preceded in death by his brother Francis.
