When Luke passed I was out of town and didn’t learn of this tragedy until after his service. I wish I could have been there for you. Please know that I think of you and hurt for your loss. Luke was a gift to this world and the loss of so much goodness is painful, but do not let your pain silence you. Speak Luke’s name often, share the stories of his love and in doing so you continue sharing the goodness that is his life and the gift of Luke will keep giving. Dear Laidley family:
I knew Luke well as a young boy and probably knew him best of the Laidley siblings. There was a Laidley sibling in almost each of my kids' classes at St. Joe's. Luke was in my son, Greg's, class.
I remember the numerous basketball games (Luke was one of the best on the team), all the microsoccer games, and all the times Luke and Greg would regularly get together with their group of friends at each other's homes. I remember the pick-up basketball games at my house out in the driveway with that group....even in the rain! I actually think they liked that best.
I can still see Luke coming around the corner at the back of our house on one of his visits with Greg's friends. He had a bucket of water in his hands and that huge (and a bit mischievous) smile on his face. You see, an innocent (?) squirt gun fight apparently had degenerated into a bucket battle and Luke was leading the pack. He saw me, flashed that smile and asked, "Got anymore buckets?" More buckets and the battle was on!
That smile. It lit up his face. I don't remember ever seeing him without it. It was welcoming, endearing, and sincere. It always said, "So nice to see you! Glad you came!" Even years later when I saw him, now a young man, it said the same, only now it was accompanied with a genuine hug. This is how I will always remember Luke.

Luke and I ran into each other at opening day for the Cubs a couple years ago. That's where we began to bond over our love of sports, as well as growing up in neighboring towns. Luke was one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I've met, and an interaction with him was to have your day made a little better.

There are many things that make Luke special, but the two things that will remain engraved in my mind will always be the sparkle in his eyes and his one and only invitational smile………
I’ll never forget how his eyes provided such an open window view of a heart and soul that was blessed with God given innocence and an optimistic anticipation of all things good. Hard to avoid the gravitational pull of his smile that was so disarming, comforting, and full of encouragement to anyone who was luck enough to cross his path.
I’m just one of the many inspired by his good nature and one who will remain obligated to keep his memory forever alive.
Goodbye only for now Luke, the 43 years that I watched you grow and thrive will always make me smile!

My first memory of Luke was when we (St. Mary's) played St. Joe's in a 7th grade basketball game. I drove to the basket and was fouled by Luke, but the ref didn’t call it. I remember looking at the ref in disbelief—and, as I turned to run down the court, Luke said to me, "Sorry, that was totally a foul." I remember thinking, "Wow, this kid is really honest." And he was. As we became teammates and friends in high school, that quality of character always stood out. Luke was simply a good human being, and I'll always remember him that way. I’m grateful that our lives crossed paths, even if only for a short time.

I've known Luke for a few years as we worked together at Backstop. On June 22nd we were in the office together for Drag Night Trivia. Luke was hilarious, but did horribly! In our short 5 minute walk out of the office though we realized we grew up a town away from each other and attended the same high school (albeit a few years apart). We knew some of the same people and commented on what a truly small World we live in. I remember his genuine smile and kind heart. He will most certainly be missed.
