Obituary of LeRoy Daniel Herchenbach
Please share a memory of LeRoy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
LeRoy Daniel Herchenbach passed away at the age of 91 on February 20, 2015 while on vacation in Jamaica with his loving companion and all surviving children.
He was born November 29, 1923 in the small eastern Nebraskan community of St.Bernard where his love of family was instilled from birth into a family that resulted in 8 children. He enjoyed a full life that could be summarized as a house with family representing a firm foundation, walls made of honor & integrity, and sheltered from life’s storms by a roof constructed of tightly woven friendships. There was always room for more, and his door was open for all to enter.
Life during the Great Depression brought a move to Illinois to seek opportunity. Another cornerstone followed by way of WWII where he proudly served during the assault at Normandy. He returned from war and was fortunate to find love in a woman named Marilee McDougall (who understood the meaning of family having been 1 of 10 children). It was with her support that they co-founded Herky’s Trucking and established a family business that became synonymous with the family name. Their marriage would expand his foundation of family with 8 children, 23 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren (at last count).
LeRoy is survived by his children; Jack (Connie), Rick, Mike, Jill (Mark Rhoderick), Joe (Beth), Amy; his loving companion, Donna Beagley, a woman that truly appreciated all that comes with a large family; his sibling Emily (Robert Kerbs); and a tapestry of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extensive family relations. He was preceded in death by Marilee (his wife of 57 years), and also by his daughters Sharyn (Charles Hershey) and Janet (Chris Calhoun).
