I was very sad to read of John's death in the Omega Sig newsletter that just arrived. Of course, I did not have the honor or knowing him, but we were both brothers of Sigma Chi. I graduated in 1974, but my years there, while now in the distant past, were very happy ones, and it sounds like his were as well -- exceedingly so. I also grew up in Libertyville, so it made me doubly sad to know that a young man who walked the same streets as I had was no longer with us. Please know that someone many miles away is touched by your grief and prays that it will eventually lighten and that the beauty of your memories and your faith will carry you forward. Bradley was out of town for the services, but he expressed his deep sadness to us over losing this great guy and classmate that he knew from his Carmel years. Bradley could not help but feel a respectful connection with John, realizing how hard he knew that John must have worked in his chemical engineering studies. Bradley finished up in civil engineering, and also did an internship in Texas. We, as a family, truly regard John's accomplishments with every level of regard and dignity. Mr. & Mrs. Thumel,
I had the privilege of meeting your son this summer as he interned here in my Plant. Both mine and his love of hunting is what many of our conversations were about; comparing Texas deer, wildlife and hunting methods to that of Illinois. What struck me with this young man was his politeness and friendly demeanor. He never spoke negatively towards anyone or anything. Where I'm from, this is something that is instilled through proper upbringing; I can tell you this without hesitation that you raised a fine young man with the traits that are not often seen in today's younger generation.
I am so sorry for your loss. As a parent of a son and daughter myself, I know that there are no words I can write that will alleviate your pain. I can only say that in the brief time I knew John, he left an indelible mark on me that I will never forget.
