Dear family and friends of Admiral Mack:
My sympathies to the family and friends. I just found out the good Admiral Gaston recently joined our brothers and sisters in Heaven. I miss him dearly. He was a great man, a naval hero and always willing to provide sage advice to more junior personnel. May you be comforted knowing that he is held dearly in our memories - those he touched and those who served with him in the Navy!
Warmest regards,
Dr. Charles Stuppard

It was an honor and privilege to serve under Rear Admiral Mack C. Gaston aboard the USS Cochrane DDG 21 departing
forty years ago this month on it's SouthPac cruise. I worked on the bridge, so I saw him up close every day we were at sea, how he skillfully mentored young Ensigns and Lt.'s and how approachable he was. I was assigned temporarily to the Navigation department. The first day at sea he walked up to me on the bridge wing and introduced himself to me with his patented firm handshake. He inspired and demanded excellence, was fair, and had great respect for the sea. After I was discharged from the Navy, I followed his career and was sad to learn of his passing. May he rest in peace in heaven and may his family be blessed.

To The Family of RADM Mack C. Gaston, USN(ret) I would like to present my most deepest sympathy and words of comfort as you celebrate the incredible life of my dear friend, mentor, colleague, and tremendous Naval Officer - RADM Mack Charles Gaston, USN(ret). I will never forget the first time I met RADM Gaston at my first National Naval Officers Conference during the 1980's, his "wonderful smile," and personality was beyond exceptional. We talked about his life, and especially his undergraduate days at Tuskegee, and his love of the mission of the National Naval Officers Association. As Public Affairs Officer, and Editor of the NNOA Newsletter, later the "Meridian," I truly enjoyed giving him a copy of the publication at our NNOA Conference in San Diego, that had a story about his promotion to Captain. But for me there were three moments in life, that was "God's Blessings" of working and seeing RADM Gaston in my life. First, during Naval Fleet Week operations in New York City during the late 1980's, it was a magical moment to salute, then Captain Mack Gaston, USN as he departed the battleship USS Iowa at pier 80 for the many fabulous ceremonies and events that were taking place in the city. Second, while attending a planning meeting for The 1992 Great Lakes Naval Summer Cruise, at Naval Training Center, Great lakes, Ill, it was a "treat" to make a visit to his office while he was serving as Commanding Officer of this most historic Naval Installation. His words of encouragement, mentoring, and giving me lessons, about the Surface Navy, provided me with positive directions for a most successful operational tour as PAO for the Annual Summer Naval Great Lakes Cruise. And third,
In Syracuse, New York, a most successful campaign was conducted to create a "Minority Wall of Honor for World War II, and Korean Veterans," in the early 1990's. As a member of the planning committee and one of the main sponsors, Clear Channel Radio, now I HeartMedia, I invited RADM Mack C. Gaston, USN(ret). to be our keynote speaker. He accepted, and his "keynote speech," and appearance at this most "Historic and Colorful Gala for Minority Veterans," is still the talk of the town among minority veterans in this year of "His Sunset to Naval Heaven 2018."
RADM Mack Charles Gaston, USN(ret) has left a "Most Lasting Legacy In the History of the U.S. Naval Services, and The National Naval Officers Association, and his contributions will continue to be the continuing foundation for the next generation." "Bravo Zulu," RADM Mack C. Gaston, USN - V/r, CAPT. Roosevelt "Rick" Wright, Jr., Ph.D.,NNOA.

Lt. Commander Gaston was my Executive Officer aboard the USS CONYNGHAM (DDG-17) during the 1970s. He was the fairest exec that I ever had. His leadership skills and "can do" attitude was apparent to all around him and I am sure that it weighed heavily on his promotion to Rear Admiral. He was well respected by all and was a great exec. May God bless his family in this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace and continue to experience fair winds and following seas.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Mack's passing. We were aware that Mack had been in ill health for several years and struggling with Alzheimers but nothing prepares you for the loss of someone you love.
I met Mack in 1970 during a deployment to Vietnam. His friendship and mentorship to a junior officer was so welcome, positive, and absolutely unforgettable. Every subsequent meeting with Mack in the Navy and later was exactly the same - welcoming, positive and unforgettable.
Margaret and I extend our deepest sympathies to Nancy and their family. Mack had a lasting, powerful impact on everyone he met and will always be remembered.

You are consistently warned in life to give flowers to a person while they are alive. It saddens me to give flowers now to you Sir with the realization, I did not give you enough enough flowers while you were alive. I let "busy" and "distance" be my excuse and now I am left with only this space to give flowers now. Sir, I hope you remember our times in Washington DC and how much I appreciated you then and told you so. Your kindness, your mentorship especially with a major situation that saved me and later allowed me to be retired and now living my best life. It has been years since our hands clasp for that grip that always had me about to genuflect. I always remembered your sage advice that as Officers we were bestowed the honor of leading and caring for somebody's child. I remember you telling me never to call anybody "stupid". I also remember you telling me how important being a Sailor was to you and how you walked your talk as a Sailor. While I neglected to reach out to you in late years, you were always in my thoughts. You have left big shoes for us all to fill. I will miss you, that big smile and always a spirited greeting. Rest in peace Sir and I hope you can feel the love I am sending now via these words.

Family, friends and all who served with and under Admiral Gaston can fill the void he has left behind with great memories of interactions they have had with him.
It was an honor to have served under Admiral Gaston '77-'79 when he was the Captain of the USS Cochrane DDG-21. "The Fastest DDG in the West", an achievement that we were all proud of.
He touched many young sailors lives, instilling a work ethic and a drive to achieve what ever we wanted to, and to make the best of ourselves.
16 years later I was honored when he invited my wife and I to attend his change of command/retirement ceremony at Great Lakes.
The Admiral asked me what I was up to and if I went to college after the Navy.
I told him I was still doing night classes while working. He said "you make sure you finish your schooling, I won't accept anything less". Even after 16 years of not seeing me, he was still concerned that I succeed at what I do. What a great man !
My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gaston family and all of those who have been touched by the Admiral.
Rest Peacefully Admiral, Fair winds and following seas shipmate, we have the watch.

If you didn’t get a good grip on him…forget it he had you and you felt it. I remember Admiral Gaston assembling the crew on the flight deck before we pulled into a port and at the end he always said these words that I still remember to this day about drinking.
