I attended Adlai Stevenson High School and was part of its first graduating class. Mr. Waldschmidt was a wonderful person and teacher and very much beloved by his students. He was always respectful and always seemed to have that little impish grin. Hugs to all who were blessed to have him in their lives.

Mr. Waldschmitt was so brilliant in the way he taught and interacted with his students. His lessons were always interesting and intellectually stimulating. He was also very sincere and caring. Not only did he boosted my self-confidence with his constant encouragement, he was also someone that I could confide and turn to for advice on my personal problems.
I am forever thankful for having been able to take his class in Adlai E. Stevenson H.S. I wish it was longer than the one year I was limited to as the '66/'67 AFS exchange student from Malaysia.
My deepest condolences to Mrs. Waldschmitt and all his children and grandchildren. I am sorry I am unable to personally pay my last respect to a truly great teacher as I am presently residing in my own country which is halfway around the globe from Illinois. But my heart is with all of you at this time.
With heartfelt love and respect,
Terry Ong

Dr. Waldschmidt was one of my favorite English teachers at SHS. He was passionate, thought-provoking and well-spoken. He taught me how to think critically and imaginatively. I always enjoyed our witty banter. But the story didn’t end when I graduated in 1984. Many years later I ran into Dr. Waldschmidt at Hewitt. Turns out we both worked there together. I could never call him Elmer as he was always Dr. Waldschmidt to me. I had so much respect for him. I am sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathy for all who loved and knew him.

I remember Dr. Waldschmidt well. His introduction to The Canterbury Tales in my Sophomore English class in 1974, when he read aloud in the original Middle English, was very dramatic and made a huge impression on my young mind. I can still hear his voice: "Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote the droghte of March hath perced to the roote..." What a great teacher he was. I am saddened to learn of his passing, and of the struggles he faced in the last years of his life. I hope his family may take solace in the knowledge of the many, many lives he touched and the love and passion for English literature that he brought to his students. Thank you, Dr. Waldschmidt.
