Josefina N. Bernardo aka “Lola Sing” to her grandchildren, passed away at the age of 97, on July 10, 2022 in Libertyville, IL. Josefina is survived by her children, Bona, Carmelo (Celine), Cristina (Tony) Alferez, Tom (Violy) and Sonia. She’s the beloved grandmother of Fides, Jun, Dino, Tracy, Christian, Betsy, Julienne, Tricia, Katrina, Joey, Faye, Jay, Richie, Mark and John Michael. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Bernardo. She married Jose on August 1,1944 in the Philippines and bore 8 children, 3 boys and 5 girls. They have a total of 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.  

Josefina was born on March 19, 1925 in Angeles City, Philippines to parents Fausta and Santiago Nuqui. She graduated from The Philippine Normal College with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in March of 1944. She taught elementary school until she moved to the United States in 1976 and became a full-time housewife.

Josefina was a member of the Third Order Secular Discalced Carmelite. She and her husband Jose never missed to pray the Liturgy of the hours in the morning and in the evening daily and she wore the brown scapular thereafter until she passed. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and traveling. Her family and friends will always remember her as a generous, helpful and giving person, even if she does not have much herself. Josefina was religious woman and a loving mother and grandmother.

A private viewing for Josefina’s family will be held on Friday, July 15, 2022 at McMurrough Funeral Home. We welcome anyone who would like to attend the burial services at Ascension Catholic Cemetery located at 1920 W.
