A legacy is something we leave behind when we die. We would say Alan left behind a legacy of love. The story of his life expressed beautifully in his obituary shows us that he greatly impacted his family and friends with his love for them.
Whenever we came to Chicago to visit he and his family would always come to the parties we planned. He also looked for other ways to be with us like going to Great America or the horse races.
Many years ago (before the triplets) he was driving a Corvette and surprised our teenage daughter by suggesting she give it a drive. She was nervous but he talked her through it and she had a fun ride.
He loved Christmas and was disappointed that as the children grew older they seemed more interested in their phones than the people surrounding them. We suggested he try telling everyone to leave their phones at the door when they arrived but he didn't want to come across as a bad guy.
Alan died too young but long enough to pass on his legacy of love to his children. Today they are a continuation of his love, values and way of life. He will be missed but he laid the foundation for the greatest of virtues - love, and we can all build on that and remember Alan in the process.

Preceded in death by his brother Donald Lew, RIP Donnie. Don, Al and I were Vegas buddies in the 1980's and had many memorable trips together. Al and I go back to Marquette University days where the three couples (Teri and I) had twin daughters, Pete and Vicki had twin sons and Al and Sheila had the triplets. Amazing times filled with lots of little people, all now grown and many with children of their own. RIP Al you were a true character in a world that needs more characters.

Alan and I were rookies in the early 1990s as we both joined Ameriprise (IDS Financial Services at that time).] I think our mutual respect enhanced our professional friendship. I remember exchanging tips/ideas/encouragement as we journeys though our careers (side by side).
I recall making acquaintance with the triplets at an IDS picnic one summer long ago. They were very young. I couldn't resist chatting with Alan for the last 30+ years about his triplets and their progress. He willingly shared stories of their growth. I think he was glad to see them graduate and become young adults. I was always inspired by Alan's responses. Raising 3 children all at once seemed mind boggling and challenging to me, and Alan always found a way to accomplish this formidable task.
It was always good to see Alan at all of our Ameriprise conferences/meetings. We were on the same profession journey, side by side.
I will miss Alan. His life was too short. He had so much more to do and to give back. He will remain in my memory for many year to come.
