Dear Tranters: I think I only met Mr. Tranter once, but he was an affable man, the sort anyone would be honored to call a friend. Andrea, who was something of a math whiz in high school (we had freshman algebra with Mr. Yingst) must have gotten her ability honestly -- from her dad. She told me a great story once of how he used to add up fares at the end of his run any given day on the Milwaukee Road. (I'm not sure I have this story exactly right.) Could do it in his head, almost effortlessly, like a human calculator. No wonder he became a broker on the BoT. What a great second career! And what a tragedy that Wall Street doesn't have more men like him, brilliant but unpretentious, on their trading desks. He will be missed, but left quite a legacy.
