Dear Grandma Han,
I was so happy I could visit Taiwan in January 2020 with Grandma Han, right before the pandemic hit. During that trip, I enjoyed hanging out with family & relatives, including seeing Grandma Han's parents' photos in the family's Buddhist shrine. Being in that space made me ponder on the lineage of the Han & Chen family, which I could not be more thankful for because without you I would not have met my lifelong partner Sean (Melos). Thank you for letting me be part of your life & family!
Love,
Sandy

Fond memories of our Road Trip to Alabama Summer 2019. Here is Mom at Johnny Cash museum Nashville. And the Nasa space center Alabama. Who knew she was such a Country Music fan?

First I'd like to thank my mom (Teresa) and Hong for their tireless work taking care of Grandma in her last years, as well as all the workers at the nursing home. As well as my dad (John), sister (Olivia) for helping out through the pandemic - and all the other relatives who played a vital role in helping Grandma out over the past 10 years or so.
When I think about Grandma I find it remarkable how she moved around the world so much in the '60s and '70s, adapting to new countries with her three children and Grandpa. It takes a lot of courage to be able to move overseas in a time where there were probably a lot of unknowns with the process. But I guess that's proof that there will always be folks around to help you out - and that the vast majority of people in this world are friendly.
I bring that up because something that's always been in my mind since being at their various homes since childhood was their wide collection of objects from different countries - the elephants, the large lamps (whose inner paper I poked holes in..), photobooks, old Japanese Enka tapes, the books in Chinese and Japanese. Had I been more curious years ago it would have been nice to ask about where each thing came from.
I have a lot of nice memories eating fruit at their Deerpath home, walking around the lake in the backyard, catching fireflies, or playing in the basement with cousins, turning the rocking chair upside down and building blanket forts. Grandma would always cook for us, a great chef and could improvise as needed.
Or the smaller condo: I remember playing games there after school, being picked up by Grandpa or Grandma, eating fruit, watching Grandma make dumplings, or trying that herbal tea blend they always had available, Peter Pan peanut butter, or the "Maria" biscuits that seemed to always be around. The homes were always well-furnished - nice rugs or dark wood tables, comfortable reclining chairs and couches - the floors as comfortable as the bunk beds.
Of course, these are mostly my memories, and I could keep going on and on - their visits to our San Diego home, or their Temecula home, or the Bloomington one. But I guess my point is that we were well taken care of. And judging by the various friends of hers we ran into at times, she was pretty social with coworkers, other churchgoers and other Taiwanese immigrants. Her and Grandpa's love for travel even led our families to get to visit Taiwan and Japan for the first time, experiences that have me still wanting to learn Chinese some day!
To end this, I remember one time, leaving the Bloomington home - probably heading back to college or Chicago - Grandma told us how much she thanked God for how well off all her grandchildren were doing, starting to tear up as she said it. Her life was full of all sorts of hardships but I also like to think it was a very happy one at times, and I'm really thankful for her efforts and life.

August 14th, 2012, at their Bloomington home! The woods in the back were fun to walk around and their home was well-decorated with objects from all over the world.
