I was saddened to hear about Joe's passing. I met Joe at Allstate and our friendship developed over our mutual interest in sports. That friendship continued as we played in a weekly "old guys basketball game" that he helped organize. It's main purpose was to have an excuse to meet afterward to have a beer and share stories about our supposed athletic accomplishments. Joe's stories would get better each time he told them, as would everyone's. People who would meet Joe for the first time would say, he seems like such a "good guy" and that he was. My condolences to the family

NancyMarisel and I share in your and your daughters ' heartbreak, and offer our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers. I will cherish the many fond memories I have of "My Father," Joe. He was a wonderful man, and lived a wonderful Iife -- and I know mine has been that much more wonderful for having known, learned from and worked with him during our many years together at Allstate and since. With love and a heavy heart, I send a warm hug from Switzerland for you, your daughters and your entire family.

Ever since my early days at Allstate -- where Joe hired me as my first manager and served twice as my boss (and long-time trusted colleague, life-long friend and source of inspiration) -- I always jokingly called him "My Father," and he would call me "My Son."
I`ll always remember his story about being the answer to a Baseball Trivia question: "Who was the only Kansas City A`s AAA Minor Leaguer drafted by Charlie Finley (a list that included stars like Joe Rudi, Sal Bando and several other MLB championship teammates on the later Oakland A`s) who never made it the majors," he would enthusiastically ask? "Joe Groner!" he would proudly answer.
Well, as far as I`m concerned, My Father Joe Groner was not only All Major League Class...he was a Hall of Famer. He`s probably telling God that same story right now, and asking God to start him at Shortstop on the real Angels All-Star team.
Show 'em what you got, Joe!
With many fond memories of My Father, and a heavy heart...

Nancy, I am shocked to hear of Joe's passing. We met in the early 70s when you were in KC and I was in Michigan. Joe and I worked on the HART Training and he came to Michigan to conduct training. We had a lot in common, including Baseball. He will be missed. Jim Plotts

Hi Nancy. Marisel and I were so shocked and saddened to hear the news of Joe’s passing. I still can’t believe it. We share in your and your daughters ‘ heartbreak and offer our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers. We had seen him in one of our recent trips from Switzerland back to Chicagoland and he seemed great...telling his war stories as only Joe could. Ever since my early days at Allstate -- where if you recall Joe hired me as my first manager and served twice as my boss (and long-time trusted colleague, life-long friend and source of inspiration) -- I always jokingly called him "My Father," and he would call me "My Son." I told “Pop” we needed to have dinner next time I was in town with our better halves. That’s a rain check – along with many fond memories -- I will always hold near and dear to my heart. I`ll always remember his story about being the answer to a Baseball Trivia question: “Who was the only Kansas City A`s AAA Minor Leaguer drafted by Charlie Finley (a list that included stars like Joe Rudi, Sal Bando and several other MLB championship teammates on the later Oakland A`s) who never made it the majors,” he would enthusiastically ask? “Joe Groner!” he would proudly answer. He`s probably telling God that same story right now, and asking God to start him at Shortstop on the real Angels All-Star team. Show 'em what you got, Joe! Te acompañamos los sentimientos, Nancy. Con mucho cariño y pena, un abrazo fuerte desde Suiza para ti y toda tu familia, Fred and Marisel (and Freddie and Alyssa)

Joseph Groner, knew me my whole life, since I was 5, he was my best adult friend. When I was confirmed at age 14, at St Josephs Catholic Church in Libertyville, Joseph Groner stood in as my sponsor, and he became more than that, he became my Uncle Joe spiritually, and I adopted the name Michael as my confirmation name, with his guidance, I could think of no better person in my life as far as a male role-model goes that taught me more than Joseph Groner, and he affected my life in the most positive way, nobody could ever replace him.
He was one of a kind

I've lost touch with so many former Allstate Corporate Relations friends, didn't know of Joe's illness, and was shocked and saddened to learn of his sudden death. Joe was for sure one of the most loved and respected people in our department - no small claim to fame when we numbered well over 100 in the '90s. He was one of those who made work fun, and made us all proud to be part of the team. The memories are strong, but the present is much diminished. My heartfelt sympathy to Nancy and the family.

We called him Joe "Bob" at the Phi Psi house in Lawrance. He was my pledge brother. While I have not seen Joe "Bob" since the late 60's my memory of him is amazingly vivid: Always a smile, quick with the one liners, talented at the piano and a good singing voice to boot! He was a true "one of a kind" then and it appears from what I have read that he only got better with time. I send my heartfelt sympathies to Joe's family, realizing that Joe's passing will be painful to bear. God bless!

Nancy, Megan & Chris, and entire Groner family, please know you are very much in thought and prayer. It seems like it was not all that long ago that your parents were over with you, Megan & Chris, for Jack's baby shower. We remember your Dad as such a supportive and gracious gentleman. Please take care, and know that your Mary Free Bed family feels your loss. We hope you find comfort in the arms of family and frieds, and in all of your wonderful memories of happier times.

We are saddened to hear about Joe's unexpected passing. I 1st met Joe at Allstate in K.C. in 1976. Joe was Public Affairs Manager (a perfect fit for him)and I was a lowly supervisor. After K.C., we both ended up in Chicago - together, enjoyed golf, old man's basketball & the Jayhawks...with a few brews in the mix. Joe's obituary memorializes him to a "T"...fun, engaging, witty and a great family man. Joe also had a unique talent - he knew how to make people feel important and valued in all his interactions - a real talent! My sympathy to you Nancy, and all of the family. Joe is among the BEST I have known...and I will miss him.

Nancy - we loved and will miss the Commissioner. When we moved to the area in 1986, Joe was quick to welcome us to town, show us the local establishments and induct me into the OMBBL. As OMBBL’s visionary, founder, referee and enforcer, I watched Joe lead well-tenured men in years of friendly Wednesday night basketball games and recovery sessions at Morgan’s/Mickey’s/ the Island. Many men changed their business schedules and family commitments to come play with Joe as he ensured we balanced fun with competition. I can honestly say, through his efforts, the OMBBL created good friends, business partners and better neighbors. Today, my fondest Illinois memories include Joe and OMBBL’s band of brothers and I know I am a better person because of his example. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
