Obituary of Eileen Ann Smalley

Eileen Ann Smalley, 79, of Grayslake, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Born and raised in northern Michigan to Gordon and Martha Hatch, Eileen became a teacher after graduating from Michigan State University. She taught for 34 years in the Eaton Rapids Public Schools. Her journey took her from 23 years in special education and finished teaching literature to middle school students. 

Eileen was passionate about reading and gardening and cultivated a thriving vegetable garden with her husband, Jim. Family was Eileen's greatest joy. Her daughter, Beth, was her best friend, and they cherished their daily conversations. Eileen also shared a deep bond with her son-in-law, Patrick, and her grandchildren, Jack and Tessa, playing an active and loving role in their lives. Her large circle of friends would gather at Torch Lake, MI every summer for over 30 years. 

A woman of strength and integrity, Eileen touched the lives of all who knew her with her honesty and generosity. She will be deeply missed.

Eileen is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Jim; her daughter, Beth (Patrick); and her grandchildren, Jack and Tessa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, Dec 27th, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1151 N St. Marys Rd, Libertyville, with a visitation starting at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Eileen would want any and all to read a book or donate to your local library or to Holy Cross Church. Any or all would be appreciated.
