Obituary of Helen Heier

Helen Heier of Vernon Hills Helen Heier, 87, passed away Monday, November 26, 2012, peacefully at her home. She was born in Kansas City on December 6, 1924. Helen was active in the community organizing the Vernon Hills Fishing Derby for over 35 years which was later named in her honor. She was also known as the much loved "lunch lady" at Hawthorn Middle School for 19 years. Helen honored this country's Veterans and firmly believed in treating them as the heroes that they are. She loved watching basketball games and could hold conversation with the most devote fans, especially of the Chicago Bulls and L.A. Lakers. Helen was also quite the trivia mastermind and could regularly outsmart the Jeopardy champions. She was of strong moral character, was a role model for all, and will be greatly missed. Helen is survived by her cherished husband of 67 years, James; her children Steven (Barbara) from Columbia TN, Richard (Patricia) of Vernon Hills, and Diana of Vernon Hills; proud grandmother of 16; and the dearest great-grandmother of 2. She was preceded in death by her beloved mom Orpha Chrisman, and just recently her daughter Darlene (and the late Clair) Rairigh. Funeral Mass will be Friday November 30th at 10:00 AM at St. Mary of Vernon Catholic Church, 236 U.S. 45 Indian Creek. Interment Willow Lawn Cemetery, Vernon Hills. Visitation Thursday from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at McMurrough Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations made VFW Military Assistance Program www.vfw.org would be greatly appreciated.
