Obituary of Evlyn Doreen Betar
Evlyn Doreen Betar (“Evie”) passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 1st surrounded by her loved ones. She was born to Suava and John May on December 21, 1933 in Winnipeg, Canada. A product of the Chicago public school system, she was known for her athletic ability as a runner on the track team. She always told us her foot speed allowed her to outrun the numerous boys in 8th grade. When her parents settled in Grayslake she had the opportunity to meet lifelong friends at Grayslake Community High School. Up until her recent health issues she remained connected to many of those friends.
She started work immediately after high school as a lab technician working for Dr. Oglesby Paul. There she met Dr. William Phelan and they married in Grayslake in January 1958. They raised 5 children including John (Anne Lee deceased), Bill (Meg) Phelan, Tom (Suzy) Phelan, Julie (Ron) Thauer and Elizabeth Phelan (deceased). She remarried to Sam Betar in 1978 and helped raise the extended Betar/Phelan 11 kids until Sam’s death in 1999. She was fiercely devoted to her 13 grandchildren including granddaughters Katie, Sarah, Laura, Lindsay, Emily & KK and grandsons Will, TJ, Max, RJ, Ian, Michael and Matthew.
Evie was generous with her time commitments to various charitable organizations and was especially fond of Misericordia where she and Elizabeth would spend time. She also enjoyed Bridge Club and Golf and especially her Hole in One!! Evie greatly cherished her family and friendships. She will always be remembered as a vivacious extrovert who made friends easily with diverse people from all walks of life. Evie lived a rich life and will be deeply missed.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the outstanding care provided by the Wellshire Lincolnshire, as well as Heartland Hospice Services of Northbrook.
