Nathan Lane posted a condolence

I met Pat in the late seventies when I was a struggling New York actor and we were both working at the Harris Polls office doing various surveys and making very little money. I was immediately drawn to her because she was a very theatrical character, sort of an Irish Catholic version of Selma Diamond, the famous comedy writer and sometime actress. She had the same deadpan delivery and husky raspy voice. She was quick with a quip and felt like a kindred spirit and a long lost relative, and since we both hated working there and felt we were destined for something better we became fast friends. She told me she needed the money because she had a lot of kids, “like about twenty or thirty”, and I said, “Like the old woman who lived in a shoe, she had so many children she didn’t know what to do?” and she said, “So you’ve heard of me”. Anyway, she enjoyed listening to me improvise with farmers about insecticides, argue with undecided voters on the phone and constantly fight with the supervisors and dramatically storm out. We next ran into each other at Taggart’s Driving School, another thing we had in common was that neither of us knew how to drive. I never made it past the first few lessons to the written exam, and I had been through the process at least twice before, but Pat went all the way and got her license. She always looked at me like a fellow soldier she had regretfully left behind on the battlefield because I never learned to drive but I explained that I would become successful enough to always afford a car service and that she needn’t worry. I think she was ticket taking and ushering at Circle In The Square when I made my Broadway debut there in 1982 in a revival of Present Laughter directed by and starring George C. Scott and I think she was still working there when I returned nine years later to work with George again in On Borrowed Time. I would often stop by there over the years, just to catch up with her and we had the occasional drink, and she even joined me and my now husband for an after show dinner once. We would talk on the phone from time to time and she would call and apologetically ask for house seats to several of the Broadway shows I did. I was always happy to hear her familiar dark rasp, which always seemed on the verge of laughter or a witty remark, and I was always glad to get her whatever she wanted. Hearing about her adventures in Italy and elsewhere I learned she was a far more complex and interesting person that one might have initially assumed. She was extremely well read and had a tenacious spirit. She was hilariously unflappable and a kind and generous soul and I always wished I had gotten to spend more time with her and gotten to know her better. Whenever we did get together she loved to reminisce about our days at the Harris Poll and then she would threaten to teach me how to drive and sweetly tell me how happy she was for my success. She definitely would have been My Most Unforgettable Character if I was writing for Reader’s Digest. I will have a glass of red wine in her honor and picture her on the beach in Italy reading a thriller and plotting her next move. She was one of a kind and will always be in my heart. ❤️ With much love and my heartfelt condolences to her family, Nathan Lane
